The Frogs of Yarramalong
The Horse Pond

This pond is in the the horse paddock adjacent to the the houses. Its position at the bottom of the paddock means that it collects all the runoff from the hill above, including the nutrients provided by the horse droppings. It is therefore very dark brown and tannic, and has large clumps of green algae growing in it, and now (Oct, 1999) also large clumps of long grass.

According to Judy Amory, the livestock don't like this water, but it doesn't seem to bother at least 4 species of frog that were collected there in the second week of October, 1999.

These frogs have been identified as the following species, and can be seen in the photos below :

  1. Litoria peroni - Peron's tree frog or Emerald spotted frog
  2. Litoria latopalmata
  3. Litoria fallax - Dwarf Green tree frog
  4. Uperoleia laevigata
